Florence E. Smith STEM School offers a unique educational opportunity for children to cultivate their imagination and explore the world around them through an inquiry-based model of instruction and learning. Our exceptionally skilled and caring staff is committed to providing our students the best environment possible to inspire and prepare each of them to realize their potential and enhance our global community, as stated in our district’s mission statement.
Classroom teachers in Pre-K – Grade 5 teach all elements of West Hartford’s standard district curriculum, enhanced with a state-of-the-art science lab, a TV production studio, and guaranteed STEM-related experiences to help fulfill our school’s mission statement. Our commitment is to inspire and empower all students to communicate effectively and collaborate in order to compete as global citizens and independent problem solvers using the integrated study of science, technology, engineering and math.
We have great pride in our community The richness of our school is reflected in the number of languages present in the Smith community which includes, in addition to English, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Arabic, Punjabi, Urdu, and Malayalam; other languages spoken by 1 or 2 students are: Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Turkish, French, Hebrew, Gujarati, Kannada, Lithuanian, Marathi, Russian, Serbo-Croatian and Tamil. These amount to a total of 165 students in a school of 350. What a joy and what a rich environment for our students, families, and staff!
The Smith Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and Family Resource Center are great partners dedicated to providing exciting extended educational experiences connected to the curriculum. We invite all of you to join our wonderful parent organization and become active members of our vibrant community.
